Electric scooters
Rental electric scooters (e-scooters) are the only way to legally ride an e-scooter on public roads or in other public places within London - and even this is limited to specific boroughs. It is still illegal to use privately-owned e-scooters or other powered transporters on public roads.
We want to explore new, environmentally-friendly forms of transport that can be used to reduce road congestion in London - but we need to make sure that any alternatives are safe for both users and non-users alike.
The current rental e-scooter trial trial is helping us test the best ways to protect the public.
Rental e-scooters have specific safety features installed. For example, participating boroughs have designated no-go areas where e-scooters cannot be ridden - the rental e-scooters will come to a safe stop. There are also go-slow areas where the speed of e-scooters will be reduced to 8mph.
Our current trial of rental e-scooters is expected to run to November 2022.
The London e-scooter rental scheme is approved by the Department for Transport (DfT).
Privately-owned e-scooters or other powered transporters are not legal to use on public roads.
E-scooters and powered transporters may be used on private land with permission from the landowner or occupier but several laws make it illegal and/or spell out the penalties if you're caught riding one on public roads:
  • Driving a motor vehicle with no insurance - you could be liable for a fixed penalty of £300 and six points on your driving licence
  • Driving vehicles on pavements is generally an offence - this applies at all times to all types of e-scooters and powered transporters
  • Riders must be 18 or over and have a full or provisional driving licence to rent an e-scooter
Some of the laws do not apply to mobility scooters or e-bikes (electrically-assisted pedal cycles) which are not treated as motor vehicles. The Gov.uk website has details of the law on powered transporters.
You are not allowed to carry e-scooters or e-unicycles on TfL services or in our stations or other premises on our public transport network, even when folded. This safety step comes after defective lithium-ion batteries in privately-owned e-scooters and e-unicycles caused fires on our network.
E-scooters hired under our rental e-scooters trial have always been banned from TfL services because they cannot be folded. You can still carry - but not ride - non-motorised scooters on our services.
Scooters in India: what you need to know before buying one
Do you remember the famous “Hamara Bajaj” TV commercial from the early 90s where the company was their Chetak scooter? I am sure you do. The scooter was so famous that people ended up waiting for years to get one home. Why? Because the demand exceeded supply and may be because Bajaj’s expectation was not so high from this scooter. Over the years we saw numerous scooter models from the Pune-based manufacturer and eventually the Chetak scooter was dead, credit this to manufacturers like Hero MotoCorp (which was then called Hero Honda), TVS and some more.
But these days the scooter segment is a completely different game. Most manufacturers have jumped into this bandwagon and are trying hard to be number one in sales and market share. No one wants to miss this opportunity and why not? The segment is seeing double digit growth – much more than the single digit growth it saw in the last fiscal. But what’s different this time? Well, for starters you don’t need to wait for years to get your hands on a scooter now. You got more than enough options but, this is where the problem arises. Some scooters look identical, some got the same displacement and some got the same price. But where there is choice, there is confusion. Which scooter to choice is the perennial confusion in the market. So, today we make things easier for you. We give you a checklist that you should consider before buying a scooter.
This is obviously your main concern area. You don’t want to see a big debit number from your bank account. You want your purchase to be a sensible and a logical one. Make sure you do enough research online by comparing various scooters through our comparison tool (link if possible). Don’t get excited when you see the price lower than what you expected. There is a high chance that you are reading the ex-showroom price and not the on-road price. Ex-showroom price is the cost of the vehicle when it is inside the showroom. Before you take it home, you need to pay the RTO charges and insurance premium that usually ranges around 10 per cent of the ex-showroom cost. Sometimes, you will also see “depot” or “handling” charges considered in the total cost, which is a way by dealers to make extra money. This is a grey area. It is the dealer’scall, if he wants to strike off that charge from your final payment he can, but legally it is not allowed.
Guide To The Fastest Electric Scooters
In today’s modern society, time is a valuable commodity. So being able to get from A to B quickly and efficiently is important. Electric scooters are a great ‘last mile’ solution for people who want to get to and from public transport fast. Electric scooters are the answer to this dilemma because they are:
  • Light
  • Small
  • Portable
  • Fast
  • Fun to ride
Electric scooters have become more popular in recent years thanks to them being easy to use and low maintenance compared to other modes of transportation. They are comfortable and lightweight, and some models are foldable, making them easy to store away when they’re not in use.
The National Association of City Transportation Officials 2018 report showed that e-scooters had overtaken e-bikes as the most popular form of shared transport in the United States.
There are a wide variety of electric scooters on the market which range in speed, price, design, durability and many other features.
That depends on the brand and make of the scooter, but the average top speed is around 25-50 km/h. This isn’t an issue for most people as it’s still quicker than going by foot, and less exhausting than going by bike.
The fastest electric scooter developed is the Rion Motors e-scooter. With a carbon fiber frame and a 5000-watt motor, it can reach speeds of up to 96 km/h. However, given the strict speed restrictions in Australia, there’s no way you’d be able to go that fast on roads here.
There are a number of factors that influence e-scooter top speed. These can be technical aspects of the scooter, such as engine wattage or battery power, but also other factors such as the weight of the rider, the tires and the terrain.
Can adults ride kick scooters
Yes, adults can ride kick scooters, provided they are designed for adults and able to hold the weight of a full-grown adult. Scooting is rising in popularity among adults and is a great way to embrace a full-body cardio exercise that has a low impact on your joints!
Adult scooters come in all shapes and forms so whatever way you’re looking to get moving there is a scooter that can fit your needs! Scooting is an accessible way to get active and we’ve found that many of our customers have turned to scooting as a result of injuries or conditions that have meant they’re unable to do certain sports or activities.
One of the main ways scooting is being adopted by adults is as a mode of transport is on the daily commute. Now more than ever people are looking for alternative ways to get to and from work outdoors, in order to avoid using public transport. Scooters offer a great way to do just this, you can travel a lot quicker than walking, it’s accessible to a wide array of people and is a fun way to travel! When was the last time you had fun on the commute?
How to Choose a Stunt Scooter?
Those who choose stunt scooter models over traditional scooters usually do so because of their exceptional durability and freestyle-ready design. A stunt scooter's parts are often reinforced for strength, for example, which helps to explain why they are often heavier than more traditional scooters. Nor do they tend to feature a folding mechanism or adjustable handlebar height.
Instead of the latter, a stunt scooter usually has a one-piece handlebar for strength. It's important not to stereotype freestyle scooters too much, though. While 4.5kg is an about average weight for such a scooter, stunt scooters have also become more technologically sophisticated in recent years. This means you may be able to pick up a freestyle scooter that weighs as little as 3.5kg.
The task of how to choose a stunt scooter becomes a much easier one when you boil it down to a few basic factors. One of those factors is money, of course. On one hand, the more you spend on a stunt scooter, the better quality it is likely to be. But if you're buying your first-ever freestyle scooter, you don't necessarily need to buy a range-topping model anyway.
If you're a more experienced stunt scooter rider, though, a higher-end model will probably make much more sense. After all, such a scooter will probably last much longer than a cheaper alternative. Potential buyers at this end of the market should keep a lookout for the likes of compression kits, metal core wheels and fluted parts - all features that help to make a scooter better-suited to skate- park use.
The handlebar of the scooter should be another point of focus. As we mentioned above, freestyle scooters tend to have a fixed one-piece handlebar. However, you will need to ensure the fixed height is appropriate. We would urge you to go for a handlebar that is as close to mid-torso as possible. There isn't necessarily anything wrong, though, with the handlebar being at waist height. After all, stunt scooters are supposed to be easy to manoeuvre to perform stunts, so they can sometimes be quite small in any case.
Weight capacity is another key factor when it comes to choosing between stunt scooters. Most freestyle scooters these days can support between 50kg and 100kg, which is easily sufficient for not only the average kid, but also many adults. Remember, nonetheless, that while stunt scooters are now often made from lightweight aluminium, the wider decks and various reinforcements that many of them feature can push up the scooter's weight. This may make them a little more cumbersome to lift and move around.
Carefully pore over all of these details when you are comparing freestyle scooters, and you'll have a good chance of determining the perfect one for you.
